New Members Bringing Fresh Perspectives
The Arts Council Board has welcomed several new board members who bring a variety of skills and backgrounds. Ann and Kyra come to us from firm foundations in community leadership roles, and cultural organizations. Their combined experience strengthens the council’s ability to support a wider range of art forms and community needs.
Ann Savage: Ann Savage grew up immersed in music and theater, studied at LSU on music scholarships, explored gospel choir, then spent formative years in Wyoming, teaching in Guyana, and working in Cooperative Extension before earning a master’s in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management and entering destination marketing. She now works as a Tourism Extension Associate with NC State University, supporting communities across North Carolina in building sustainable tourism with a strong emphasis on the arts. Ann moved to Sanford in 2021 and enjoys running, hiking, cooking, and baking.
Kyra Rodriguez: Kyra Rodriguez is a veteran photographer from Montana. Currently living in North Carolina with her amazing husband and four wonderful children. She attended Montana State University for Photography in the days of film. Slow in adopting digital photography, she demands high quality from her work. Her own worst critic translates into tremendous galleries.
These new voices will help the Arts Council better understand the challenges artists face today and develop programs that provide meaningful support.
New Programs Designed to Engage and Inspire
Alongside the board changes, the Arts Council has introduced several new programs aimed at fostering creativity and community participation. These initiatives are designed to offer opportunities for artists at all stages of their careers and to bring art closer to the public.
Beer & Bob
This annual event brings in a certified Bob Ross painting instructor to provide 2 hours of guided teaching utilizing Bob Ross's painting techniques. Participants receive:
All art supplies
Bob Ross inspired instruction
1 beverage of their choice
Kiwanis ChalkWalk and Artisan Fair
The council collaborates with the City of Sanford to host this fun and unique annual event that brings live sidewalk chalk art and the great craft artisans of Lee County together for a day of beauty and fun. Activities include:
Sidewalk chalk art exhibition -- That grows throughout the day!
A large variety of local craft artisans who set booths just in time for the holiday shopping season to being.
Collaborative performances and events
Blackout Poetry Month Competition
During national poetry month, we work with Lee County Schools to sponsor a blackout poetry/art competition that turns 1 page of a classic work of literature into visual and word art.
These programs provide hands-on experiences that inspire creativity and build appreciation for the arts among young people and families.
Several other new programs for the youth and community members are coming next year!
